Come and see the Worlds largest Beehive situated at Wolds Way Lavender!
Apart from being what we believe to be the worlds largest beehive our specially shaped structure actually has a practical use. During the season our observaton beehive contains working honey bees busily going about their everyday task of producing the honey.
After collecting the lavender pollen, the bees then take it into their hive and work together to make the honey.
Especially designed for ease of viewing; the frames hold the honeycombs. Bees are in their hundreds on this frame and it is a fascinating process that is well worth watching.
Come and see if you can spot the Queen Bee. Read all about the process on our new display boards; a comprehensive and educational display.
Watch how the bees take turns to be in the middle to keep warm. See if you can spot when some of the bees are preparing to swarm.
Once the frame is full of honey our local bee-keeper collects the honey and fills the jars, which are then ready to be sold in our shop. A local and natural product from Wolds Way Lavender. Delicious!
Lavender Infused Honey or Lavender Pollinated Honey 1;- Lavender pollinated Honey that has been made by the Bees pollinating mainly Lavender Flowers. There are not many areas in England with enough Acres of Lavender to produce Lavender pollinated Honey. Other Honeys you may see advertised are Heather Honey, Borage Honey, Rapeseed Honey Etc. The main Lavender Pollinated honey producing area within the EU is in southern France. It should be noted that just because the Honey is pollinated on a certain plant, that it does not necessarily taste of that plant, but it does have its own unique taste / consistency. Bee keepers move their hives many miles at different times of the year following the different flowering seasons .
2;- Wolds Way Lavender Infused Honey is based on a Honey that is warmed with the Lavender flowers in it so steeping the flavour of the Lavender into the honey The honey is then strained before bottling. The infused Honey does have the flavour of lavender along with a combination of both the benefits of Lavender and Honey
